1. Introduction to Pelayo boat model

The PELAYO was the most powerful ship built in the Spanish shipyards during the time leading up to the Spanish American War. During the war, it was the fleet of Rear Admiral Camaras Reserve Squadron, and did not engage in any military action during the war. The ship was named after Pelayo (or Pelagei) (? - 737). ), leader of the Rebellion against the Moors, leading to the Reconquista. After a great victory at Covadonga (718) over the Moors, Asturia became the first independent Spanish kingdom and Pelayo, the first king of Asturia.

PELAYO was built in France. Its design was based on the French warship MARSEAU, but the Pelayo was smaller and able to pass through the Suez Canal. Almirante Antequera, Spain's Navy Minister, believes PELAYO will be the first of a series of new warships. But, as a result of the crisis in the Caroline Islands, there was a change in the plan. Instead of building PELAYO's intended sister relationships, the INFANTA MARIA TERESA class cruisers were built to act in the colonies. PELAYO is considered to have too little coal resistance and is too slow for this use. PELAYO was completed in 1890 and took part in many international parades and shows.
